Also, a bit of news about the
Vance Hotel. The forthcoming George Clooney movie "Leatherheads" is
going to be using the insides of the old hotel for shooting. The pool was
renovated for that purpose.
Also, another note on the pool. It has been rumored the pool was shut
down due to a girl drowning there. A prevalent myth suggests that her
ghost haunts the pool. Most people in the local area take this as fact,
but in truth, I have discovered the pool was shut down because of racism.
When it came time to allow non-whites into the pool, the owners
thought that people would stop coming, and instead closed the pool and
created the dance floor on top of it, but apparently not before throwing
old asbestos and debris into the pool. Part of the restoration of the pool
for the movie involved cleaning out all that old garbage.

A new addition to the found section: numerous photos found in a
spelling dictionary.

Added a Ghost Town in
western NC. Because of it's condition I'm not saying exactly where in
western NC.
Two new locations: the
Troutman Family Cemetery, and the
Shinville Graveyard. Also
updated info on the Bunker Hill
Covered Bridge because of a post in the guestbook. Apparently
the bits of history I heard about it were wrong, since it was actually
built after the Civil War, and was not used during it.
Created a digital version of a
front page article that recently ran in the Statesville Record & Landmark
about this site. Also included are the pictures that were printed with the
story. That is on the info page for
now.
Currently working on a gallery of "one-off's"; that being single
photos of abandoned and/or neglected places and things. As soon as I
figure out an efficient way to organize them they will be uploaded.
Also, just a note- Abandoned NC turns 3 years old on April the 19th.
I've been doing this a little longer than that, but the site it's self
is 3.
I'd like to thank our gracious host who gives us this space for free
(I certainly couldn't afford to pay for one myself right now), all the
people I've met and explored with through the years, and everyone whose
shown an interest in what I do. I explore for myself but I post these
pictures for everyone else, so that they can share in my adventures. I
hope you've all enjoyed it.
I recently explored and abandoned trailer park and the
empty house adjacent to it.
A developer has bought the land they are on and is going to demolish
everything sometime in the near future.

Added an article I found about obstetrician
Richard Boyd floating around on the
internet. Dr. Boyd was a long time employee at Davis Hospital and
delivered somewhere in the neighborhood of 8,000 babies during his time
there, including yours truly.
It is finished! All locations have been restored! Plus, there's a
new one! Munchkin Land. Also, I
have decided to expand Abandoned NC a bit. I already had the beginnings of
the Found page, but I'm also
going to be adding local folklore
in the next couple months. A couple trips to the James Iredell Room at the
Statesville library has convinced me that there are lots of interesting
stories in this areas history which are left untold. I aim to be (I'm
guessing) one of the only internet sources for this information. First up:
the Santer. What is a Santer you ask? Stick around, when I get the
information together I'll let you know.
There's new stuff on the Found page for now,
go take a look.
Hopefully this is me getting back in the swing of things after that
many months absence.

Finally another update. 5 locations re-upped.
Tuesday, August 30th, 2005
Over a month since the last update. Unfortunately with no money and a
job that takes up most of my free time, I haven't had much opportunity to
explore in the last couple months.
In fact I probably wouldn't even have updated for another week if I
hadn't been driving by and seen construction crews leveling
Sullivan Mill. That
prompted me to upload those pictures as well as a few other minor sets.
You may also notice I haven't included much commentary about the sets
I did upload; one reason it takes so long to recreate the old pages
(besides having to dig through and resize all the pictures) is that it
takes a while to write about the places I have photographed and explored,
and what's more, I don't remember every single detail about them so I
probably wont be doing it much anymore and instead just letting the
pictures speak for themselves.

So admittedly I have been neglecting this site, but with good reason.
I recently found myself in a new job which takes a good amount of my time
and this unfortunately has lead to fewer chances to get out and explore
and fewer chances to finish reconstructing the locations page. I will try
to get back in the swing of things within the next week or so when my
schedule becomes more stable.
Today is the first day for the new site design. I tried to go with
something clean and simple with neutral colors, so if things seem a little
bland, I apologize, but the photos are really the main part of the site.
With that in mind I am slowly going through each location and adding
pictures from the original copies, resizing them to larger sizes than the
ones I had previously- this way details are more easily seen, etc. etc.
All content copyright Abandoned NC. Please ask
permission for use. I probably wont care.
